How Personal Loan EMI is Calculated

The EMI formula for personal loans is identical to all amortising loans:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / [(1 + r)^n - 1]

Where:

  • P = Principal loan amount

  • r = Monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)

  • n = Tenure in months

Example:

Loan amount = ₹5,00,000 Interest rate = 12% per annum Monthly rate = 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01 Tenure = 3 years = 36 months

EMI = 5,00,000 × 0.01 × (1.01)^36 / [(1.01)^36 - 1] EMI = ₹16,607 per month

Total paid = ₹16,607 × 36 = ₹5,97,852 Total interest = ₹5,97,852 − ₹5,00,000 = ₹97,852

5 Key Factors That Determine Your EMI

1. Loan Amount The higher the loan amount, the higher the EMI. Borrow only what you need — every additional lakh increases your EMI by approximately ₹3,300 for a 3-year loan at 12%.

2. Interest Rate Interest rate is the biggest driver of total loan cost. A person with a CIBIL score of 750+ can get rates as low as 10.49% while someone with a score below 650 may pay 18% to 24%. On a ₹5 lakh loan over 3 years, the difference between 12% and 18% is over ₹40,000 in total interest.

3. Loan Tenure Choosing a 5-year tenure instead of 3 years reduces your EMI significantly but increases total interest by 60% to 70%. Always choose the shortest tenure your income can comfortably support.

4. Processing Fee Processing fees of 1% to 3% are charged upfront and add to the true cost of your loan. A 2% fee on a ₹5 lakh loan means ₹10,000 deducted immediately. Our calculator includes this in the total cost calculation.

5. Your CIBIL Score A score above 750 qualifies you for the lowest rates. Between 650 and 750 you may get medium rates. Below 650 most banks will either reject your application or charge very high rates.

5 Ways to Lower Your EMI

1. Improve your credit score before applying Even waiting 3 to 6 months to improve your CIBIL score from 680 to 750 can reduce your interest rate by 2% to 4%, saving thousands over the loan tenure.

2. Choose a longer tenure Extending from 3 years to 5 years reduces EMI by approximately 25% but remember the total interest paid increases.

3. Negotiate with your bank Existing customers with a good repayment track record can often negotiate 0.5% to 1% lower rates. Always ask.

4. Apply with a co-applicant Adding a co-applicant with good income and credit score can increase loan eligibility and potentially lower the interest rate.

5. Prepay whenever possible Unlike home loans, personal loans often have prepayment charges of 2% to 4%. Check your loan agreement — if charges are low, prepaying a lump sum in the first year saves significant interest.
