What Each Weather Metric Means
Temperature vs Feels Like: The actual temperature is the air temperature measured by a thermometer in the shade. "Feels like" accounts for wind chill (makes it feel colder) and humidity (makes it feel hotter). On a humid summer day in Delhi, 40°C can feel like 48°C. On a windy winter day in Shimla, 5°C can feel like -2°C.
Humidity: Relative humidity is the percentage of moisture in the air relative to the maximum it can hold at that temperature. Above 70% feels sticky and uncomfortable. Below 30% feels dry — common in North Indian winters. The monsoon season across India typically brings humidity of 80% to 95%.
Wind Speed: Measured in km/h. Below 20 km/h is a gentle breeze — pleasant. 20 to 40 km/h is a moderate breeze. Above 60 km/h can make walking difficult. Above 90 km/h is storm-force wind. Coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata regularly experience strong winds during monsoon.
UV Index: Measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. A UV Index above 6 requires sunscreen. Above 8 is very high — protect skin and eyes. In Indian summers, UV Index of 10 to 12 (extreme) is common between 10 AM and 4 PM. Hill stations typically have higher UV Index than plains because the atmosphere is thinner at altitude.
Visibility: Measured in kilometers. In clear weather, visibility can be 20 km or more. Fog (common in North India from November to February) reduces visibility to under 100 meters. Smog in Delhi during winter often reduces visibility to 500 meters to 1 km.
